Thermal Bridging Analysis for Passivhaus

Summary

This 3-day course is aimed at all Passive House Designers & Consultants who wish to be able to calculate thermal bridges for entry to the PHPP. The course will present all the latest requirements for thermal bridge assessment, as published by the Passivhaus Institute, for the first time in English, including all ambient junctions as well as external and internal ground floor/wall junctions.

The first 2 days will concentrate on 2d calculations and day 3 will focus 3d calculations. Attendees will receive training licences for Psi-Therm software.

 

Programme:

Day 1:

  • Thermal bridging defined
  • Extents of the model
  • U-values & modelling U-values
  • Correct treatment of air cavities & voids
  • Drawing in Psi-Therm – cavity wall example
  • Exercise I: Eaves detail
  • Temperature reduction factors
  • Exercise II: Window installed jamb psi-value

 

Day 2:

  • Calculation of temperature factor (fRsi) & climate-s
  • pecific requirements
  • Ground floor slab-on-grade/external wall – Passive
  • House requirements
  • Exercise I – external wall/ground floor slab
  • Internal wall penetrating floor slab insulation – P
  • assive House requirements
  • Exercise II – internal wall/ground floor slab
  • BR497: UK Part L requirements for thermal bridge as
  • sessment – boundary conditions &
  • measurement convention

 

Day 3:

  • Requirements for 3D modelling
  • Calculation of point thermal bridging (Chi-values)
  • & input to PHPP
  • Constructing 3D models in Psi Therm (modelling from
  • scratch & extruding 2D Psi Therm models)
  • Exercise I: Timber beam supported on stacked timber
  • frame wall
