Passivhaus projects finalists at Structural Timber Awards

The finalists for the Structural Timber Awards have been announced with a number of certified Passivhaus projects shortlisted.

Over 160 entries were assessed across 14 categories, with the winners being announced at a formal ceremony on October 6th at the NEC in Birmingham, part of UK Construction Week.

Social Housing Project of the Year

Passive Close, Rainham - Climate Energy Homes

An affordable residential development of 51 homes in Rainham, Essex and one of the largest certified Passivhaus schemes in the UK.

The project was delivered for Circle Housing Group using Climate Energy Homes' proprietary, off-site constructed timber frame system.

Private Housing Project of the Year

Dundon Passivhaus - Prewitt Bizley Architects

A 2015 UK Passivhaus Award shortlisted project, the detached private house has already won a significant accolade having been awarded a RIBA National Award earlier this year.

The self-built, timber frame building, built within the hilliside in rural Somerset re-affirms the fact that interesting architecture doesn’t have to be sacrificed to achieve excellent energy performance.

Low Energy Project of the Year

River Studio - Sjölander da Cruz Architects

A finalist in the Bespoke Design category at the 2014 UK Passivhaus Awards, River Studio is a low-energy retrofit of a converted former packing shed, resulting in a modern, energy-efficient architectural studio.

The existing structure was wrapped in SIPS panels and cladding to form a continuous airtight layer outside of the structural zone.
