The Passivhaus approach to building design offers a tried and tested sustainable strategy which is meaningful because it is measurable in its use of energy and has no equal in our temperate climate. The methodology employs a combination of super insulation, appropriate areas of superbly designed triple glazed windows and doors for optimum beneficial solar gain, air tight construction with a heat recovery ventilation system ( MVHR) to achieve a space heating consumption of less than 15kWh/m2yr: which is vastly superior in comparison to the current UK Buildings Regulations which is in the order of 120kWh/m2yr. Passivhaus is the most cost effective way to save our finite energy resources and offers a high quality of thermal comfort for the people who use and live in the buildings.

PassivDor Ltd is a sister company to Solidor Ltd, one of the UK’s fastest growing and most widely regarded composite door manufacturers. PassivDor has been specifically set up as a separate company to address the growing need for entrance doors that meet the important Passivhaus standard. While most composite door manufacturers can offer products that achieve a 1.2 W/(m²K) 'U' value, the achievement of the strict 0.8 U-value standard for PassivHaus is some considerable way off for the vast majority of the industry. However, at PassivDor, there are three distinct options using a combination of KBE/Kömmerling 88mm frames, 0.618 U-value 62mm door slabs and an exclusive Rodenberg door slab, from the European market leaders in entrance doors. We’ve also worked with Residence9 to offer a composite door solution. The company’s environmental credentials are also enhanced by their ‘Green Promise’ which is supported by KBE/Kömmerling and Residence9 lead-free door frames, Werbar recycled PVCu reinforcement and a comprehensive recycling policy.

Touchwood Homes is a family run company who have been in the construction industry for three generations, building all types of homes. Since the 1990s we realised the construction industry, like all aspects of industry will have to undergo major changes to conserve energy and reduce carbon emissions. We have our central office in Hertfordshire where our design team work on your bespoke home, and our Passivhaus expert works to ensure the design achieves the requirements of the German low energy design specification. Our houses, being pre-cut, are quick to install, with a timber frame typically being possible to install within 3-4 weeks. We only build in timber frame, wood being a sustainable building material, and through the use of I beams allows 300mm + thick walls, which we pump solid with insulation.

WARM: based on theory and practice. Everything we do comes down to building physics – if it can’t be proven we won’t do it. From an airtight green-oak office to a refurbishment of a conservation property, we have continually tested our ideas on our own properties. Warm was formally set up in January 2009 by father and daughter Peter Warm & Sally Godber. Their aim – to designing buildings that demonstrated real energy savings. The Passivhaus standard hit a chord with this ambition and quickly became the mainstay of their work. Warm now specialise in Teaching, Designing, Certifying & Testing to the Passivhaus standard. Peter is endorsed by the Passivhaus Institut in Darmstadt as a certifier, so they can offer a complete package.
