What is EBS's Passivhaus pick, and why is it special?

It must be our colleague Niall Crosson’s family home! Niall was the first employee with Ecological in Ireland over 20 years ago, and he is now our Group Technical Director. He’s waited a long time to create his Passivhaus dream and has built a truly spectacular house for him, his wife and 3 children. The house epitomises our philosophy of using ecological building materials, focussed on performance, with low embodied carbon materials.

Niall recently undertook a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and the findings were noteworthy with the building achieving an impressive carbon score of 378 CO₂ equivalent per m², far exceeding the RIAI 2030 Climate Challenge targets. Examples like this demonstrate the feasibility of using natural materials with lower embodied carbon, not only for public projects, but also for residential modular buildings.

Niall heads up all the research and develops our wide range of appropriate building products and systems relevant to our construction types in the UK and Ireland, so after all the theory as an Engineer and a Passivhaus Consultant, building his own home has enabled him to fully appreciate how complex and challenging building sites can be, particularly for self-builders!
