The heat is on: why cool buildings matter
As London Climate Action Week is underway, much of the UK is experiencing another spell of unusually hot weather.
While many events this week focus on solutions to the climate emergency, the temperatures outside are a reminder that climate impacts are already being felt today. Extreme heat is becoming more frequent, more intense and longer lasting, particularly in urban areas where the urban heat island effect can further increase temperatures.
Summer comfort
Creating buildings that are both low carbon and resilient to a changing climate is critical challenge facing the built environment. Passivhaus addresses both. This week, Passivhaus Open Days site visits are offering the opportunity to experience high-performance buildings first-hand. Visitors can see how good design supports comfort, health and resilience, even during challenging weather conditions.
Some events in the South East have been cancelled due to the extreem heat warnings. If you are attending an event this week, please take sensible precautions in the heat, including carrying water, wearing appropriate clothing and using sun protection where necessary.
The safety and wellbeing of visitors, hosts and project teams remains the priority. In some cases, organisers may decide that conditions are too hot for a tour to proceed safely and may postpone or cancel events at short notice. We ask attendees to check event communications before travelling and thank hosts for taking any necessary steps to keep visitors safe.
The future we are talking about this week is already being built.
