Ostro Passivhaus currently under construction
Ostro under construction May 2014: Paper Igloo Architects
Ostro is a detached new build 4-bed timber frame home located within the historical conservation village of Kippen, near Stirling. The semi-rural plot is south-facing, featuring a small burn, and faces woodland and fields to the south and west. As well as aiming for Passivhaus Certification, the proposals will meet the demanding requirements of the Scottish Technical Standards Section 7: Sustainability Gold Level.
A 'box within a box' is the key design concept. An inner box is conceived as a homogenous sculptural form that is present in every space, particularly the double height living area; it compactly contains all of the wet services and circulation, and serves the other spaces around the periphery of the plan. The outer box is a rainscreen of naturally weathered larch cladding with triple glazed windows and doors positioned to maximize views of the landscape and sky beyond.
The build costs are striving to be kept as low as possible with elements of self-build from both clients and architects to help achieve this.
