Stirley Farm receives EnerPHit certification

The Cre8 Barn at Stirley Community Farm near Huddersfield has been successfully certified to the EnerPHit standard. One of only a handful of certified EnerPHit projects in the UK, the derelict former cow byre was retrofitted as a Design & Build project by Passivhaus Trust members, 21 Degrees's (formerly Green Building Store) construction division, Green Building Company.

The project is the first to be certified in the UK using the 'component' approach, which involves every element of the building meeting strict U-value requirements and being modelled in PHPP. This approach provides an alternative method of certification for projects with certain aspects of the building which the design team have no control over, such as the orientation, opening sizes and roof height.

A super-insulated timber frame was constructed within the existing walls of the barn to preserve the exterior facade whilst vastly improving the energy efficiency of the building fabric, and enhancing the structural integrity of the original stone building.

For more information about the project, including a 30 page technical briefing and a regular blog, visit the 21 Degrees (formerly Green Building Store) website.
