Passivhaus aspirations for Wereham Village Hall

Proposals for Wereham Village Hall have won planning approval. The lottery funded project is to provide a replacement building for the existing Village Hall with a standalone, single storey building that is aiming for Passivhaus certification. PHT member Parsons + Whittley, based in Norfolk, designed the scheme which is located in a conservation area.

The existing timber building dates back to the First World War which has severe restrictions on its use due to its age and fragility. The new 387m2 hall will act as a new hub for the existing active community, and be located within close proximity to the existing hall, on the adjacent playing field site, maintaining good access and prominent location within Wereham village.

The proposal is set to create a new exemplar national beacon of an environmentally sustainable Passivhaus community building.  The timber clad building received favourable responses both at public consultation and in pre-application discussions with the planners.

The new village hub will have a capacity of approximately 200 occupants, and will provide social activities for the elderly along with opportunities for adults to learn new skills.

Construction is due to start in March 2017.

We are most grateful to the owners of the site for their understanding of the aspiration within the village for a replacement community facility… It aims to be [one of] the first English exemplar Passivhaus-designed community building, delivering a facility with greatly reduced running costs.
