Rectory Cottage receives EnerPHit certification

EnerPHit certification has recently been awarded to Rectory Cottage, a refurbished stone-built cottage located in Powys, Wales. The clients were initially seeking to find a plot of land to construct a new-build home to Passivhaus standards, but after being unable to find a suitable plot the couple decided to purchase and refurbish an existing property.

The retrofit strategy involved installing a layer of 150mm insulation in the ground floor slab and 200mm externally on the 18 inch thick walls, whilst the roof was completely reconstructed to allow the insertion of the airtightness barrier and insulation.

Due to the nature of the project, heavy machinery could not be used to excavate the ground floor slab to install the new layer of insulation, so the floor had to be removed manually with spades and pick-axes.


PHT member Alan Clarke was responsible for developing a heating and ventilation strategy for the property, specificying a PAUL NOVUS 300 MVHR system and rigid steel ducting which was easily installed in the loft space made available by the warm roof. As the dwelling is off mains gas, LPG gas cylinders provide any additional heating.

 

The MVHR system seems to be working really well, is quiet in operation, helping dry out the building and delivering great air quality. It was also good to get practical advice in using the system from Green Building Store’s Steve Clarke, when he came to commission the system”

Materials:

PHT member Green Building Store supplied a range of products for the project including the MVHR system, airtightness membranes and Passivhaus certified triple glazed timber windows and doors, which were key to the project due to the EnerPHit component certification route.

Walls: 200 mm Plustherm graphited EPS EWI on smoothed original cement render finish. Weatherproofed with K-rend system. U-value = 0.12 W/m² K.

Roof: 100 mm Ecotherm above airtightness membrane and 90 mm Knauf Earthwool insulation between rafters. U-value = 0.15 W/m² K.

Floor: Floors excavated and insulated with 150 mm Ecotherm. U-value = 0.14 W/m² K.

Windows: Triple glazed timber outward opening casement windows, with insulated frame.
U-value = 0.75 W/m² K.
