The Passivhaus Trust is on a high after a fantastic trip to London for Futurebuild 2023.  Over three jam-packed days in London, thousands of industry players exchanged ideas, inspiration and education through talks, exhibitions and workshops and the Trust were delighted to be part of the mission to drive the construction industry towards zero carbon.

A highly effective way of providing optimum standards of occupant comfort and health, slashing energy use and carbon emissions from buildings.  We were blown away with the interest in the insightful Passivhaus activities covering topics from how modular construction delivers benefits to the net zero agenda to insulation solutions for providing future proofed housing at scale in the UK.

Passivhaus and the cost of living crisis

Matt Bridgestock of PHT patron members John Gilbert Architects chaired a popular seminar which covered a diverse range of hot topics exploring how Passivhaus provides solutions to the current energy bill crisis.  The engaging workshop discussed the energy and cost-saving benefits of building and retrofitting using the low energy building standard and methodology.

Emma Osmundsen of Sixty Bricks gave her take on the costs and benefits of Passivhaus newbuild, before PHT patron member Architype's presentation on how Passivhaus can help to inform cost-effective retrofit plans.  Robert Prewett of PHT member Prewit Bizley Architects finished the session with a step-by-step retrofit action plan approach and what actions we can all take right now.

Day two saw our Passivhaus Trust members invited to join us for in-person drinks and networking. The event, hosted by Advantage Austria, was a great success and provided an engaging platform for networking and catching up with others in the Passivhaus community.

As well as the mingling with our guests, we also shared information about the upcoming UK Passivhaus Awards 2023, as well as the publication of the new Passivhaus Overlay to the RIBA Plan of Work and our new 'How to build a Passivhaus' webinar series.

It was also fantastic to see so many Passivhaus Trust members taking part in other speaking sessions and exhibiting thoroughout the event, showcasing the range of technology, products and services the industry has to offer.  Thank you especially to PHT Patron Internorm for the very warm welcome we received each morning of the event!

To top it off, with a 90% female delivery team in a male-dominated construction industry, we were able to raise a glass and celebrate the Passivhaus Trust women on International Women’s Day.

How to build a net zero Passivhaus

On the final day, we were back on stage to discuss the upcoming ‘How to build a Passivhaus’ technical guidance which highlights the key aspects of designing to the Passivhaus standard and the do's and donts on how to successfully build a Passivhaus.

We had a fabulous session on ‘How to build a Passivhaus’ with the enthusiastic audience spilling out the edges of the space, to hear about planning and constructing Passivhaus buildings and designing and installing energy efficient building services.  Passivhaus is drawing the crowds even more than ever, as people recognise that it is an ideal route to net zero.

Piers Sadler, DeltaQ
