Thomas Vale win 'Innovation Award' for Passivhaus schools

Founder members Thomas Vale have recieved the 'Innovation Award 2012'  for their Passivhaus schols at the West Midlands Constructing Excellence Awards 2012. The winners were announced at the Celebrating Construction 2012 Dinner at the International Conference Centre, Birmingham on 6th July 2012, organised by WMCCE (West Midlands Centre for Constructing Excellence).

The Innovation Award rewards organisations that have gone beyond the established norms and broken new ground in genuine innovation which has the potential to change the way the industry operates. It is about developing new solutions to the problems we encounter, achieving an innovative solution which enhances the value of the finished product, without increasing the risks associated with it.

Thomas Vale took the bold step of constructing the schools to Passivhaus standards at no extra cost to the Authority. This required significant adaptation of technologies widely used in the housing environment along with the development of a trained staff and workforce who were capable of delivering these challenging standards both on current and future projects.

Oakmeadow has an innovative design with corridors eliminated and combined with specialist spaces to form two activity 'hubs', around which the classrooms are arranged. Bushbury Hills was designed with a simple and highly legible layout, with all classrooms arranged on two floors around a generous and airy, uplifting activity 'hub'. These projects were a WMCCE Demonstration Project.
