Help showcase Passivhaus in health & comfort research

There is currently a surge in government and academic interest in how buildings influence health, and a number of wide-ranging research programmes are now getting under way in the UK.

The Passivhaus Trust is confident that Passivhaus buildings lead the way in delivering healthy, comfortable, affordably warm indoor spaces, and we're keen to see this reflected in the evidence base.

Call for engagement

We're therefore seeking to connect academic research teams with Passivhaus projects suitable to be included in their monitoring and analysis. Could yours be one of them? Passivhaus Trust members are invited to share your interest in engaging with these research opportunities by filling in the brief form below.

Respond now

This is also an opportunity to share post-occupancy information that has already been collected in Passivhaus (and EnerPHit) buildings more widely, both in the research community and here in the Passivhaus community. The form below invites you to let us know about any existing monitoring and evaluation programmes on your project.

Why take part?

If we can make the right connections, it will be a chance for the academic world to learn more about Passivhaus. For Trust members, by participating you could:

  • Strengthen the case for Passivhaus by showcasing its proven benefits in independent academic studies;
  • Gain insights into the indoor environmental quality of your own projects;
  • Benefit from academic expertise in ethics clearance and agreements;
  • In some cases, access funding for monitoring and research, including instruments.

Your engagement will help build the evidence that informs policy, supports best practice, and demonstrates that Passivhaus sets the standard for healthy, resilient buildings.

Current research programmes

The research programmes we're in contact with have a range of different areas of focus and criteria for inclusion – but the most important criterion is that the design team and the client or building owner are interested in learning about the buildings!

As of Autumn 2025, the programmes we know about include research relating to:

  • schools and other education settings for children (under 18s)
  • residential retrofit
  • domestic and other residential settings (care homes, hospitals etc) with a focus on the safety of vulnerable residents in heat waves and other extreme weather events.
  • Residential settings where technology that impacts the indoor environment (dehumidifiers, filters, air conditioning etc) is being used  – with a focus on social equity
  • Buildings in locations where there is a high risk of PM 2.5 pollution

New programmes regularly come to our notice, so this list of topics is not exclusive. The form bellow invites you to note particular topics you are interested in or special features about your project that may be relevant.

Other research initiatives

Are you interested in instigating or collaborating on a research project of your own? Please get in touch to tell us about what would interest you and your experience to date (if any).
