UK's first Passivhaus research building at UEA gets planning go-ahead

Planners have given the go-ahead for the development of a Passivhaus research building at the University of East Anglia (UEA), which is aiming for both Passivhaus certification and BREEAM Outstanding.

The Norwich Enterprise Centre will be a focus for low carbon innovation in the region, and will be constructed by Morgan Sindall, working with Trust Patron member Adapt Centre for the Built Environment. The building, which is designed by Trust Patron member Architype with BDP as structural and environmental engineer, includes offices, classrooms, communal meeting areas, a lecture theatre and dedicated space for trialling construction innovations.

Locally sourced natural materials will be used to construct the building, including Norfolk straw and Thetford timber. The building will be built from a hybrid glulam, Brettstapel and Larsen truss structure with timber raised floors with minimal pad foundations. The whole building will be insulated with East Anglian grown hemp, and a rammed chalk lecture theatre will also be installed. As part of the winning construction design, Architype also included a rainscreen thatch cladding made from Norfolk grown Yeoman wheat and reed.

Construction on the Centre is expected to begin in the next few months with a planned completion and opening in January of 2015.
