East Ayrshire Passivhaus Farmhouse receives certification
A Passivhaus Farmhouse in East Ayrshire has recently been certified by Warm: Low Energy Building Practice. The Farmhouse was completed in Spring 2013 and has been occupied since.
Developing a comfortable, low maintenance, light filled and warm home that takes advantage of the stunning views from the site were the driving force behind this design. The Client was interested in Passivhaus from the start of the project, but only decided to meet the standard and go for certification after gaining planning consent.
The house is on a very exposed site overlooking Ailsa Craig and Arran on the Scottish West Coast. The client and contractor worked closely during construction, with great attention to detail. The airtightness test result was excellent at 0.22@50 pa, especially as this was the first passivhaus built by Hope Homes. The heat demand is modelled at 13kWh/m2 and heat load 9W/m2. It is off the mains gas grid being serviced with mains water and electricity only. Space heating is provided by a small wood stove and direct electric. Hot water is provided by an air source heat pump.
The project was taken on by Kirsty Maguire Architect Ltd at the start of the Building Warrant stage, when the client decided to build it to meet the passivhaus standard, because of Kirsty’s passivhaus expertise and qualifications. The design up to planning stage was carried out by another practice, with Kirsty as the project architect.
