Stirley Community Farm goes down the Elemental approach towards EnerPHit certification

Yorkshire Wildlife Trust's Stirley Community Farm near Huddersfield is undertaking a pioneering low energy refurbishment to transform a derelict cow byre into a flexible, all-purpose educational centre and space. The project is working towards the exacting EnerPHit standard (a variation of the Passivhaus standard, specifically designed for retrofits).

The building work is being undertaken by 21 Degrees's construction division Green Building Company. On the project blog, project leader Bill Butcher explains how and why they had to go down the Elemental route towards achieving EnerPHit certification. One of the main factors in this decision was certain structural issues regarding the foundations and barn walls which only emerged once work began on site which had a big knock on effect on the final layout.
