Eric Pickles visits pre-fab Rainham Passivhaus

Circle Housing's 51 affordable home Passivhaus development in Rainham has been praised by Communities Secretary, Eric Pickles, who visit the construction site on the 23 April 2014. He recently visit another regeneration passivhaus scheme in Great Yarmouth earlier this year.

quoteBuilding more affordable homes is an essential part of this government’s long-term economic plan. Almost 100,000 have been built since 2010 and our ambitious affordable housing programme will deliver 335,000 new homes by 2018. At Rainham offsite construction and cutting-edge technology has been used to quickly build attractive, high-quality affordable homes. I want all developers to consider benefits of this approach so we can build more homes where families want to live, and at the same time support British businesses. Eric Pickles, Communities Secretary.

The homes are constructed using the ecoTECH super-insulated timber panel system – for which Climate Energy Homes holds the UK patent – with brick and timber cladding.

The homes can be erected to be weather tight within a day and fully completed ready for trades and services within one week per house. Designed to be compliant with the Code for Sustainable Homes (CfSH) and Passivhaus standards.

The first residents will be arriving in July 2014 and all of the homes will be completed by October 2014. It is predicted that residents living in a three bedroom home could see their energy costs slashed from around £1,240 per year to approximately £350.

With all the recent site visits maybe we will see Passivhaus being taken more seriously within the Government as a solution to meeting UK energy and carbon reducton targets.
